ABOUT IPFW
The IPFW Mastodon women's soccer squad returns 14 players who started at least two matches a season ago, including players who scored 10 of the team's 12 goals last year. Under first-year head coach Jason Burr, the Mastodons look to improve on their 6-12-1 record from 2013.
SCOUTING THE MASTODONS
After going unbeaten during exhibition play by way of a tie (1-1) and a win (2-0), IPFW (0-1-0) opened up the 2014 non-conference slate on the road at Ball State. The 'Dons fell victim to a slow start, giving up three goals in the first half en route to a 3-0 loss.
Thanks in large part to junior goalkeeper Sam Pavlika, IPFW recovered to shut out the Cardinals in the second half to keep the margin at three. Pavalika, who has started every game in her career, made several acrobatic saves to keep Ball State out of the net in the second period. She tallied a total of nine saves in the game—just one shy of her career-high—on 20 shots by the Cardinals. Pavlika needs just five saves to move into fourth on the all-time saves list and 23 to move into third in program history.
Five different Mastodons registered a total of nine shots at Ball State, led by junior midfielder Rachel Good, who collected three in the game.
While the IPFW offense was held at bay in the opener, the team does return its top two scorers from last year in forward Andie Lazzerini (3G, 2A) and midfielder Gaby Romo (4G, 1A). With a year of experience under their belts, new head coach Burr will look to the sophomore tandem to key the attack. The addition of Taylor Pavlika and the return of Bishir (2G) will also provide a boost on the offensive side of the ball.
SCOUTING THE TITANS
Detroit returns eight starters from a 2013 squad that went 11-8-1 and reached the Horizon League Tournament semifinals for the fourth-straight season. The returnees include the entire back-four defensive line—a group made up of three seniors and a sophomore—and a junior in the net.
Defender Alyssa Lotito is a difference-maker on both sides of the ball, anchoring the back-line while keying the offense up front. The senior led the team and the conference with 11 assists in 2013. The Titans also welcome back two of their top three goal scorers in senior midfielder Alyssa Riley and junior midfielder Jennifer Borawski, who combined to score 11 goals a season ago.
In their respective season opener, the Titans fell at Toledo, 3-1. Freshman Suzie Redick, playing in her first collegiate regular season game, notched the lone goal for Detroit. The team registered nine shots in the game, led by three shots by Riley.
ALL-TIME SERIES
2014 marks the 10th all-time meeting between the two schools and the first time they will meet since 2009. The two teams played every year from 2001 until 2009, with Detroit holding an 8-1 lead in the series. The Mastodons' lone win came at home on October, 14, 2003 in a 2-0 shutout. The most recent matchup was a 2-1 victory for the Titans on September 13, 2009 in Fort Wayne, Indiana.
