ABOUT IPFW
The IPFW Mastodon women's soccer squad returns 14 players who started at least two matches a season ago, including players who scored 10 of the team's 12 goals a last year. Under first-year head coach Jason Burr, the Mastodons look to improve on their 6-12-1 record from 2013.
SCOUTING THE MASTODONS
The Blue and White dropped its regular season home-opener on Friday night, falling 2-0 to Detroit at Hefner Field. While the two teams played fairly even throughout the game—as indicated by the final stat of 12 shots for each team on the night—it was the Titans who were able to capitalize on two of their chances. The Mastodons did create opportunities in front of the goal, but couldn't punch anything past the Detroit keeper.
Junior goalkeeper Sam Pavlika had another solid night in goal, making three saves in 90 minutes of play.
While the IPFW offense has been held bay through the first two games, the team does return its top two scorers from last year in forward Lazzerini (3G, 2A) and midfielder Gaby Romo (4G, 1A). Lazzerini and Romo have both been dangerous in the attack so far in 2014, but have yet to find the back of the net. With a year of experience under their belts, new head coach Burr is looking to the sophomore tandem to key the attack. The addition of Taylor Pavlika and the return of Bishir (2G) will also provide a boost on the offensive side of the ball.
SCOUTING THE NORSE
The Norse posted a 6-10-2 overall record last year and returns 21 players from the 2013 squad. After only losing three players to graduation, NKU welcomes eight newcomers to the team this year. Northern Kentucky is under the direction of Bob Sheehan, who is beginning his 18th season at the helm and holds the distinction of being the only head coach in program history.
On opening weekend, the Norse went unbeaten as they registered a 4-0 shutout at home over Eastern Illinois and followed with a 1-1 tie against Morehead State, also at home. Four different players recorded goals for NKU in a game that was eventually cut short by lightning in the 71st minute.
The task was a little tougher in the second game of the weekend. After a scoreless first half, the Norse got on the board by way of freshman forward Macy Hamblin, who knocked in her second goal in as many games. The Eagles tied the game less than two minutes later to even the score and the eventual final margin.
NKU goalkeeper Tanner Ruberg turned in a strong weekend in the net, recording nine saves, a shutout and a .50 goals-against-average en route to being named the Atlantic Sun Conference's Defensive Player of the Week.
ALL-TIME SERIES
The Mastodons and the Norse are facing off for only the third time in the series history and for the first time in 14 years. Northern Kentucky leads the series 2-0, winning both games played in consecutive years during the 1999 and 2000 seasons. In the last meeting, the Northern Kentucky up-ended IPFW 8-0 in a game that was played at the home of the Norse in Highland Heights, Kentucky.
IPFW PICKED SIXTH
IPFW was picked sixth by the Summit League coaches, announced by the league office last week. The Mastodons earned 31 total poll points. South Dakota State was picked second with 55 points and one first-place vote, followed by North Dakota State (48), Oral Roberts (42), and Western Illinois (34). Rounding out the field after IPFW was IUPUI ( 19), Omaha (17) and South Dakota (14).

The Mastodons, in addition to their strenuous Summit League schedule, face off against a challenging non-conference slate that includes teams from the Big Ten (Michigan State), Big East (Butler), Mid-American Conference (Ball State, Miami (Ohio), and Central Michigan), Missouri Valley Conference (Loyola (Ill.) and Indiana State), Atlantic Sun Conference (Northern Kentucky), and Horizon League (Detroit and Valparaiso).
