CARBONDALE, Ill. - In the opening day of the Saluki Invitational, the IPFW women's volleyball team dropped a pair of matches to Southern Illinois 3-1 (19-25, 23-25, 25-20, 21-25) and Marshall 3-2 (24-26, 23-25, 25-18, 25-17, 17-19). The Mastodons head into the final day of the tournament with a 5-4 record on the season.
In the nightcap against Marshall, IPFW's Anna Wrede finished with a career-high 14 blocks, including four solo. Wrede's total is second-most in program history and sixth on the Summit League all-time list. The 14 blocks by Wrede trail only Julie Hefty's 16 against Lewis on October 5, 1984. It was also the first time a Mastodon player has finished with double-digit blocks since Alli Hook had 11 at Centenary on September 26, 2009.
As a team, IPFW ended the match against Marshall with 22.5 blocks, the most by a Mastodon team since finishing with 23.0 in their match at IUPUI on October 18, 2008. The mark is seventh all-time in IPFW history and fourth most in Summit League history.
Emily Spencer and Kendall Wienkes each finished with a double-double for the match. Spencer had 21 kills and 13 digs, while Wienkes went for 12 kills and 12 digs. Olivia Hahn had a season-high 22 digs and Madison Spence dished out a season-high 40 assists.
In the first set against the Thundering Herd, the Mastodons trailed from the opening serve and were unable to recover from the early deficit. IPFW led for a majority of the second set, but Marshall made a late comeback, scoring seven consecutive points to close out the set.
After the intermission, the Mastodons trailed early but a five-point rally gave them the lead for good. In the fourth set, IPFW never trailed after jumping out to a 14-5 lead. Midway through the set, the 'Dons used a 7-1 run to push their lead to 22-12 before forcing the decisive fifth set.
With the score tied 4-4 in the final frame, Marshall used a 6-0 rally to take the lead. The 'Dons fought back six times to tie the set, but were unable to retake the lead before the Herd scored the final two points to take the match.
Against Southern Illinois in the opening match of the tournament, the Mastodons led 13-12, but a 6-1 SIU point swing gave them the win. The second set saw eight ties as neither team led by more than three points in the set. A 4-1 Saluki advantage midway through gave them the lead as the 'Dons were unable to make the late comeback.
The Mastodons never trailed in the third set after jumping out to a 10-3 lead. In the fourth set, the 'Dons again took an early lead, however, Southern Illinois wrapped up the match with the final eight points to snatch the set away from the Mastodons.
Emily Spencer finished with a match-high 16 kills while Kendall Wienkes had 13 of her own. Both players finished one dig shy of a double-double.
With Spencer finishing both matches in double-digit kills, she improves her team record to 30 consecutive matches with 10-plus kills.
