
Women's Tennis Closes Opening Day of MSU Invite

EAST LANSING, Mich. - The IPFW women's tennis team opened play at the 2014 Auto-Owners Insurance Spartan Invite with singles competitions against Michigan State and Toledo, and doubles against Detroit.
In the opening matches of the day, against Michigan State, it was Alina Schibol who picked up a 0-6, 6-4, 6-4 win at the No. 7 spot to give IPFW its only win against the Spartans. Against MSU, three of the seven singles matches went to a third set, and two others needed a tiebreaker.,
Mayu Sato, the defending Summit League Player of the Year, fell 6-0, 5-7, 6-0 to MSU's Erin Faulkner at the No. 1 spot, while Carlota Trevino fell 7-5, 2-6, 6-0 to Catherine Parenteau at No. 3. Sofia Sorokina fell at No. 4 by a 7-6 (7-3), 6-4 score, while Marcy Huck slipped 6-1, 7-6 (7-4) at No. 5 singles.
In doubles against Detroit, IPFW picked up three wins in four total matches, including an 8-3 victory by Sato and Huck at No. 1 over the Titan pair of Irina Slizovskaya and Valeriya Kulikovskaya. Trevino and Ella Norgren won 7-5 at No. 3 doubles, with Sorokina and Sara Sherif winning 6-4 at No. 4 doubles.
Against the Toledo Rockets, Mayu Sato won a quick 6-1, 6-3 match at No. 1, with half of the remaining six matches needing a third set; however, the Mastodons fell in each. Huck fell 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 at No. 4 singles, while Emily Richardson fell 4-6, 6-2, 6-0 at No. 6. Schibol split her first two sets, 6-3, 3-6, before falling 6-4 in the final set of the day.
The Mastodons return to action on Sunday, September 14, with a doubles battle with Michigan State and Detroit, and a singles competition against Detroit.
