Sizeland Paces IPFW at Ball State Invitational

MUNCIE, Ind. - A perfect day from IPFW newcomer Tom Sizeland has paced IPFW through the first day of the Ball State Invitational, as the team went a perfect 3-0 in doubles matches on the day.
Sizeland, who teamed with Karl Wangensten-Oye to advance to the second round of doubles with a bye, also went 2-0 in Flight B singles with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Luis Ulloa of Chicago State, followed by a 7-5, 6-1 win over Dean Dumitru of Indianapolis in the second round.
Gerard Guell and Martin Muadi, fresh off of a tournament runner-up finish at the IU Hoosier Invitational, picked up an 8-4 win over Sergiu Muresan and Mario Noba of Chicago State. Daniel Cardenas and Andres Cobos battled through seven match points in the set, holding off Thomas Gans and Adam Reinhart of IUPUI by an 8-7 (7-6) score.
Connor Andrews and Derek Romer picked up an 8-5 win over Dayton's Andy Druffel and Graham Reinbold in the Flight B Round of 16.
Guell took his opening singles match, topping the 2014 Ball State No. 1 player Ray Leonard by a 6-4, 6-1 score. He followed with a hard-fought 7-6 (7-3), 4-6, 6-2 loss to Zach Berry of Dayton. Against Ball State's Patrick Down, Cobos fought off three match points to prevail 5-7, 7-5, 6-4 in the first round, before falling 6-3, 6-0 to Andre Romanello of Marquette.
Cardenas split his first two singles matches, winning 7-5, 6-1 over Mario Noboa of Chicago State, before falling 6-3, 6-2 to Lucas Andersen of Ball State. Also splitting on the first day was Wangensten-Oye and Raa; Wangensten-Oye won 6-4, 6-3 over Marcus Nalley of IUPUI, before falling in three sets to Patrick Elliott by scores of 3-6, 6-0, 6-1, while Raa prevailed 6-1, 6-2 over Bradley Luetschwager of IUPUI and fell 6-1, 4-6, 6-1 to Collin Rigney of Ball State.
Muadi fell in his opening singles match in a three-set battle, a 6-0, 4-6, 6-2 loss to Kris Trukov of Marquette, while Romer fell 6-2, 6-3 to Jose Nader Calero of IUPUI. Connor Andrews fell in three sets, 2-6, 6-3, 6-0 to Kyle MacDonald of Dayton and do Val dropped a 2-6, 3-1 match in which he retired early. Romer answered his early loss with a 7-5, 4-6, 6-2 win over Dayton's Graham Reinbold.
The Mastodons return to action on Saturday morning in the second of three days of the Cardinal Invitational.
