
Strong Play for IPFW Men's Tennis Continues on Second Day at BSU

MUNCIE, Ind. - The IPFW men's tennis team has a doubles team in the finals of both Flight A and Flight B, and six total players in the semifinals of the consolation bracket of their individual flights at the 2014 Ball State Invitational.
Fresh off of a runner-up finish at the IU Hoosier Invitational, the doubles pair of Gerard Guell and Martin Muadi picked up back-to-back 8-4 victories over Dayton's Carsten Fisher and Josh Maylon, and Collin Rigney and Ray Leonard of Ball State. The duo will face off against Lucas Anderson and Patrick Elliot of Ball State for the Flight A Championship.
In Flight B, Connor Andrews and Derek Romer advanced to the semifinals because of an injury default, but picked up an 8-4 win over Ball State's Jan Jirus and Patrick O'Connor. The Flight B final will see the Mastodon pair face off against Dayton's Colin Bernier and Simon Jayaram.
In the Doubles Flight A Quarterfinal round, IPFW's Daniel Cardenas and Andres Cobos fell by a close 8-6 score to BSU's Rigney and Leonard. In the same round, Tom Sizeland and Karl Wangensten-Oye fell 8-3 to Marquette's Mackenzie Stearns and Kris Trukov.
Individually, Sizeland advanced to the semifinals of the Flight B Bracket with a 7-5, 2-6, 7-6 (7-2) win over Marquette's Gleb Sklyr, before dropping a 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 match to Ball State's Collin Rigney in the semifinals.
Martin Muadi picked up back-to-back wins in the Flight A consolation bracket, started with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Dayton's Carsten Fisher, and then a 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 win over Dayton's Josh Maylon.
In the Flight B consolation bracket, Romer won the marathon-match of the tournament with a 7-6 (13-11), 6-3 battle over IUPUI's Bradley Luetschwager, and will face the Jaguars' Jac Newis in the semifinals on Sunday morning. Andrews also advanced to the Flight B semifinals with an injury victory.
The Mastodons have three of the four semifinalists in the Flight C consolation bracket in Cobos, Cardenas, and Wangensten-Oye. Cobos won 6-3, 6-1 over IUPUI's Matt Moe and 6-1, 6-2 over teammate Jonathan Raa to advance to the semi's. Cardenas picked up a 6-2, 6-0 win over Ball State's Patrick O'Connor, before advancing by an injury walk-over. Wangensten-Oye advanced to the quarterfinal round because of a bye, and a walk-over victory over Dayton's Simon Jayaram.
Wangensten-Oye will face off against Cardenas in the semifinals, while Cobos will see IUPUI's Adam Reinhart, each at 9 a.m. on Sunday morning.
