BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The IPFW track and field team kicked off 2015 at the Bowling Green Opener at Perry Fieldhouse in Bowling Green, Ohio on Saturday afternoon.
In addition to Bowling Green, the meet featured teams from Ball State, Miami (Ohio), Toledo and Western Michigan.
Sophomore Brittany Beard—the team's top runner from a year ago—highlighted the day with a second place finish in the mile run with a time of 5:00.47. The mark was just under a second off the program record of 4:59.57, which was set by Crystina Martinez back in 2009. The performance was also a career-best for Beard as she broke her previous individual top time of 5:05.06. Beard also competed in the 600-meter dash, turning in a time of 1:43.65 to take seventh overall.
After setting a program record in the long jump in her Mastodon debut in December, Kiawna Cottrell had another strong day for the Blue and White—this time in the running events. The freshman collected a pair of top-10 finishes on the day, placing seventh and 10th in the 60-meter dash and the 200-meter dash, respectively. Her time of 7.93 in the 60-meter final was just three-hundredths of a second off the school record of 7.90, while her preliminary time clocked in a 7.92. In the 200-meter sprint, Cottrell again flirted with the program record as her mark of 26.59 was just four-hundredths of a second off the top time in IPFW history.
Sophomore Rachel Kacer also had a solid day for the 'Dons as she nabbed a top-10 finish in the 5,000-meter with a time of 19:02.20—good for eighth overall. The mark was also a personal-best for Kacer as she beat her previous career-high of 20:38.21 in the event. The second-year long distance runner followed that up with an 11th-place finish in the 3,000-meter with a time of 11:08.46, again breaking a career-best time of 11:47.62 in that event.
Rounding out the day of top-10 finishes were a pair of sophomores in Tori Nida and Kyley Marano. Nida took sixth in the 300-meter sprint with a time of 45.87, while Marano also turned in a sixth-place finish in the high jump (1.50m, 5-.01.00).
