FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The IPFW women's indoor track and field team continues its indoor season as they host Butler, Detroit, IUPUI, Oakland and Valparaiso in the IPFW Duals at Gates Field House on Friday, January 23 and 3 p.m.
Meet: IPFW Duals
When: Friday, January 23 | 3 p.m.
Where: Fort Wayne, Ind. | Gates Field House
LAST TIME OUT
IPFW kicked off the New Year at the Bowling Green Opener on Friday, January 10 in Bowling Green, Ohio, with several strong performances highlighting the day.
Underclassmen shined for the young 'Dons, who were led by sophomores Brittany Beard and Rachel Kacer and freshman Kiawna Cottrell. Beard—the top runner from a year ago—turned in the best feat of the day with a second place finish in the mile run (5:00.47). In addition to being a career best for the second-year runner, the mark was just under a second off the program record of 4:59.57 that was set by Crystina Martinez back in 2009.
Cottrell continued to impress in her second collegiate meet. After setting a program record in the long jump at the Mastodon Opener in December, the freshman collected a pair of top-10 finishes on the day, placing seventh and 10th in the 60-meter dash and the 200-meter dash, respectively. Her times were just hundredths of a second off the program records in both events.
Kacer rounded out the day by setting a new career high in the 5,000 meter run with a time of 19:02.20—which was also good for eighth overall in the event. Fellow sophomores Tori Nida and Kyley Marano also turned in top-10 finishes on the day, with Nida taking sixth in the 300-meter sprint and Marano recording a sixth-place finish in the high jump.
WHO TO WATCH FOR
Despite being a young squad with 24 underclassmen on a 27-person roster, a strong group of sophomores will lead the way this season.
Beard, Nida and Marano are all key returnees for the Blue and White as the trio were a part of last year's 4x400m relay that just missed on setting the program record a season ago. Nida also recorded team season-bests a year ago in the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:01.06, while Marano turned in team-bests in the 200-meter dash (26.95) and high jump (5-4.25/1.63m).
Fellow sophomore Alexiz Wygant was a stud in her first year for IPFW with indoor season-bests in the long jump (14-7/1.63m), triple jump (31-3/9.52m) and pentathlon (2274).
Junior Andrea Bell, a veteran on this year's team, will be in the forefront for distance running as she recorded a team-best time of 18:24.24 in the 5,000-meter event during the 2013-14 indoor season.
