
Men's Tennis Sweep Opening Day of Spring Season

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The IPFW men's tennis team swept its opening two matches of the 2015 spring season, topping Chicago State and St. Francis (Pa.), 5-2 against the Cougars and 6-1 against the Red Flash.
Against the Cougars, the Mastodons struck first in doubles, when the pair of Connor Andrews and Gerard Guell won by a 6-1 score at No. 1 pairs. A 6-2 IPFW victory by Andres Cobos and Daniel Cardenas at No. 2 doubles gave the Mastodons the point, and the No. 3 doubles match in which Carlos do Val and Karl Wangensten-Oye was stopped with the Mastodon pair leading 4-2.
In singles, Cobos picked up the team's first victory, 6-2, 6-2 at No. 3 singles. Guell followed with a 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 1 singles. After a Chicago State win at No. 4 singles - the Cougars' first win of the match, which was followed by another Chicago State win that cut the margin to 3-2 in favor of IPFW.
Leading by just one match, the Mastodons closed strong with a 6-1, 6-0 Wangensten-Oye win at No 5 singles and a 6-4, 6-4 Andrews win at No. 6 singles.
Later that afternoon, IPFW got a 5-1 win over St. Francis, in which IPFW swept the doubles, starting with a team default win at No. 3 doubles, while Muadi and Guell won 6-3 at No. 1 pairs, and Cobos and Cardenas combined for a 6-2 win at No. 2 doubles.
Andrews was unopposed at No. 6 singles, pushing IPFW to a 2-0 lead, as Cobos completed his perfect afternoon with a 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 3 singles. Cardenas clinched the IPFW team win with a 6-3, 7-5 victory at No. 2 singles. Guell won in matching 6-2 sets at No. 1 singles, before the Red Flash picked up their first win in the match at No. 4 singles. Wangensten-Oye closed the match with a 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 5 singles.
The Mastodons return to action on Saturday, January 24, when the team hosts the Redbirds of Illinois State at Empowered Sports Club.
