Mastodons Sweep Past Youngstown State

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The IPFW men's tennis team evened its weekend record while improving to 3-2 on the young spring season with a dominating 7-0 sweep of the Youngstown Penguins on Saturday afternoon at the Empowerd Sports Club.
The Mastodons quickly swept through doubles, the first final coming at No. 2 where defending Summit League Player of the Week Andres Cobos and Daniel Cardenas picked up a 6-2 victory. Connor Andrews and Karl Wangensten-Oye won 6-3 at No. 3 pairs, while Gerard Guell and Martin Muadi won 6-4 at No. 1 pairs.
Cobos was the first to close out in singles, as he pushed IPFW to a 2-0 lead with a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 3 singles. Cardenas needed three sets, winning 7-5, 5-7, 11-9 in a balanced match at No. 2 singles, before the match was clinched with a 6-4, 6-2 win by Carlos do Val at No. 4 singles.
Playing in the top spot in the lineup, Gerard Guell won 6-4, 3-6, 6-3, for the team's fifth point, while the sixth and seventh points came at No. 5 and No. 6 singles, respectively. Muadi won 6-1, 6-1 at No. 5, before Karl Wangensten-Oye closed out the match with a 7-5, 6-1 win at No. 6.
The Mastodons take to the road during the next weekend, playing a pair of matches in Kalamazoo, Mich. on February 6 and 7, before taking on Wright State on February 8 in Dayton.
