Mastodons Split Final Day, Take Series over Alabama A&M 3-1

Brandon Soat and Evan VanSumeren were each 4-for-8 on the final day, as Brock Logan, Kaleb Zimmer, Shannon Baker, Shane Trevino, Kendall Whitman, and Greg Kaiser each had two hits on the weekends' final day.
In the first game of the day, the Mastodons jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the third inning when Kaiser singled in VanSumeren, before Baker singled home Whitman, putting IPFW ahead by a pair of runs.
The Bulldogs answered with five runs an inning and a half later, before Zimmer doubled home Baker and Trevino to close the gap to one at 5-4. Alabama A&M added five more runs in the bottom of the fifth to put the hosts ahead 10-4, and added four more runs in the bottom of the sixth to give the game its 14-4 final score.
Zimmer was 2-for-2 in the game with a pair of RBI's, as Soat and Baker were each 2-for-4. Trevor Storie picked up the loss, pitching 3.2 innings, striking out two and giving up five earned runs.
In the afternoon finale, Alabama A&M scored a run in the bottom of the first inning before IPFW answered back with a solo home run from Logan, knotting the score at one run apiece.,
IPFW then poured on four runs in the top of the third, the first coming on an RBI groundout from Soat, before Whitman hit an RBI double, which was followed by a Trevino two-run home run, putting the visitors ahead 5-1.
Alabama A&M answered back with four runs of its own in the bottom of the third, before IPFW scored six runs in the top of the fourth, a half-inning that saw five pitching changes. The opening - and eventual game-winning run - came when Lucas Salerno scored on a fielder's choice. A VanSumeren double scored Jonathan Valenzuela-Reece, before Whitman singled, scoring VanSumeren.,
A Logan double scored Trevino and Whitman, before Kaiser singled home Logan for the Mastodons' 11th run of the game.
In the top of the fifth Soat singled home VanSumeren, who opened the inning with a double, before Alabama A&M went down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the fifth as the game was stopped after five innings because of darkness, giving IPFW the 12-5 victory.
VanSumeren was 3-for-4 at the plate in the finale, while Trevino was 2-for-3, and Soat, Whitman, and Logan were each 2-for-4. Logan drove in three, as VanSumeren scored three times.
Nate White picked up the victory in the afternoon finale, pitching an inning in relief.,
The Mastodons return to action next weekend when the squad travels south to Murray State for a four-game series starting on February 20 at 3 p.m.
