Baseball Falls in Weekend Opener 4-1 to Murray State
2/21/2015 11:36:00 PM | Baseball
EMERSON, Ga. - Despite nine strikeouts from senior Ryan Wells, and a solo home run from Kendall Whitman, the IPFW baseball team dropped its first game of the weekend by a 4-1 score to the Murray State Racers.
The day, which was originally scheduled as a doubleheader, was shortened to just one seven-inning game because of a late start to the game, and will conclude with two games on Sunday afternoon.
Whitman was 2-for-4 at the plate on the day, while Brandon Soat and Sean Herberger had the team's other two hits.
Wells picked up the loss, pitching the first four innings of the game, striking out eight while giving up two earned runs and scattered four hits. Kyle Sorensen came on to pitch the final two innings in relief, striking out one and giving up one hit.
The Racers struck first in the bottom of the second inning when left fielder Derek Yoder walked, stole a pair of bases, and then scored on an error. A batter later Matt McGowan hit a triple to provide the game-winning RBI, and push the hosts to a 2-0 lead.
An inning later the Racers used a pair of doubles, to provide the momentum for a second two-run inning, putting Murray State ahead 4-0 after three frames.
The Mastodons reached the scoreboard in the top of the sixth inning when Whitman hit an inning-opening home run to left-center field, snapping the shutout bid, but could not score again in the game.
The loss drops IPFW to 3-2 on the season, while Murray State improves to 1-3.
Brock Downey got the victory for Murray State, going six innings, striking out eight and scattering three hits, while Cody Maerz picked up the save, pitching the final inning of the contest, allowing a solitary hit.
