CHICAGO - The IPFW men's tennis team evened its record at 5-5 with a 4-3 win over the UIC Flames in the weekend finale for the Mastodons.
"The team responded to adversity in picking up its win today," said IPFW assistant coach Jonathan Batuello. "Losing the doubles point in a tiebreaker can be tough to answer back from as UIC had the momentum. The team came back and won five first-sets in singles, which gave us confidence that we carried to a solid win."
The doubles opened in a promising way for IPFW, as the duo of Karl Wangensten-Oye and Gerard Guell picked up a 6-1 victory at No. 3 pairs, before Andres Cobos and Daniel Cardenas fell 6-2 at No. 2 to knot the score, and putting all eyes on the No. 1 doubles match.
At No. 1 pairs, Connor Andrews and Martin Muadi battled to a 6-6 tie through regulation play, before the UIC team out-scored the Mastodons in the tiebreaker, winning the doubles match 7-6 (7-4), giving the Flames the all-important doubles point.
The Mastodons showed few ill-effects of falling in the doubles point, as IPFW took the first three points of singles play. Wangensten-Oye continued his quick play on the day with a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 6 singles, knotting the match score at one win apiece, before Muadi took a 6-2, 7-5 win at No. 5 singles.
The IPFW lead reached two at 3-1 after a 6-2, 1-6, 6-2 win by Andres Cobos at No. 2 singles; however, UIC cut its deficit to one, before the Mastodons closed the door with a Cardenas 7-5, 6-4 win at No. 4 singles. With the match victory in hand, the Flames closed out the match with a 6-7 (4-7), 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 3 singles.
The match is the Mastodon's last until March 6 when the team travels to western New York, with a match at Niagara, followed by a match at St. Bonaventure a day later.
