NIAGARA, N.Y. - The IPFW men's tennis team dominated the Niagara Purple Eagles on Friday afternoon by a 6-1 score, improving the team's record to 6-5 on the season.
"This was a very good result against a good team," said assistant tennis coach Jonathan Batuello. "We came out and played solid doubles, and even the position we lost at (one doubles) had a chance to take a lead. Our singles continued to be strong, just as they have been all season. This was a very solid start to the road trip."
IPFW made quick work of the doubles point, starting with a 6-0 win by Martin Muadi and Karl Wangensten-Oye at No. 3 doubles, before the No. 2 pair of Andres Cobos and Daniel Cardenas took a 6-3 win. The No. 1 tandem of Gerard Guell and Connor Andrews fell in a narrow 6-4 battele at the top pairs position.
Carlos do Val won easily for the Mastodons at No. 3 singles by a 6-1, 6-2 score, before Andrews swept his opponent 6-4, 6-3 at No. 6 singles, putting the Mastodons ahead 3-0. The match was clinched for IPFW at No. 1 singles where Guell knocked off his opponent 6-2, 7-6 (7-5).
Wangensten-Oye dropped his first set, but rallied for a 4-6, 6-2, 6-1 victory at No. 5 singles. The lone IPFW loss came at No. 2 singles, where Cobos took the first set 6-1 before dropping the next two sets by 6-2 and 7-5 scores. In a match that was the last to end, Cardenas picked up a victory at No. 4 singles in straight sets; however, each of the two sets went into a tiebreaker, winning 7-6 (7-5), 7-6 (7-5).
The Mastodons return to action on Saturday morning when the team stays in western New York to face off against the Saint Bonaventure Bonnies.
