OLEAN, N.Y. - The IPFW men's tennis team capped a strong weekend with a 6-1 win over the St. Bonaventure Bonnies, giving the Mastodons a weekend sweep in Western New York.
"Our team kept up its strong play from yesterday for another good win," said assistant coach Jonathan Batuello. "We took all three doubles matches, which is big for momentum, and rode that through singles. It is great to have a three-match win streak, and know that we are playing well heading into league play next weekend."
The No. 1 doubles pair of Connor Andrews and Gerard Guell was the first to finish with a 6-2 victory, before the No. 3 team of Martin Muadi and Karl Wangensten-Oye secured the doubles point with a 6-3 win. The No. 2 pair of Daniel Cardenas and Andres Cobos closed the doubles with a 6-4 win, giving IPFW a sweep of the pairs.
IPFW swept through the first three singles matches, clinching the weekend sweep. Guell used straight sets to win 6-1, 6-1, before Cobos took a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 2 singles. The match was clinched at No. 4 singles where Cardenas won by a 7-5, 6-3 score.
St. Bonaventure won its only match of the day at No. 3 singles, where Carlos do Val was edged by a 3-6, 7-6 (7-3), 1-0 (7-3) score.
The Mastodons closed strong in the match with a 6-3, 6-2 win by Karl Wangensten-Oye at No. 5 singles, before Jonathan Raa won in his spring debut by a 6-2, 6-4 score at No. 6 singles.
The squad travels to IUPUI on March 14 for the team's Summit League opener, and the final road match of the 2015 season, as the final 12 regular season matches and the 2015 Summit League Championships will be played in Fort Wayne.
