INDIANAPOLIS - The IPFW men's tennis team saw its three-match win streak fall in the team's 2015 Summit League opener, falling 5-2 at IUPUI.
The game was the final road match of the season for the Mastodons, as the final 12 matches are in Fort Wayne, with the Summit League Championships also hosted by the Mastodons.
In doubles, the Jaguars took the first completed match, as IPFW's top pair of Gerard Guell and Connor Andrews fell 8-2. The remaining two matches were tightly contested, with IUPUI's No. 3 doubles pair topping IPFW's team of Martin Muadi and Karl Wangensten-Oye by an 8-6 score to claim the point. The No. 2 doubles team of Daniel Cardenas and Andres Cobos rebounded to take a win; however, the doubles point had already been decided.
Guell opened singles with a 6-2, 6-1 win to knot the team score at 1-1, until the Jaguars ran off a stretch of three straight victories at No. 4, No. 3, and No. 5 singles to claim the team victory - as the last four matches of the contest needed three sets overall between the two squads.
After an IUPUI win at No. 2 singles taking the match score to 5-1, Wangensten-Oye picked up a 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 6 singles to give the match its 5-2 final score.
The Mastodons return to action on March 20, when the team hosts the Toledo Rockets in a 7 p.m. match.
