2/27/2015 11:45:00 PM | Softball
CONROE, Texas - After bad weather changed its schedule for a second time, the IPFW softball team finally returned to the field after two weeks off. The Mastodons dropped two tough games to Big 12 opponent Oklahoma State 8-0 and 5-1.
Morghyn Neal led the 'Dons on the day going 3-for-5 at the plate and driving in IPFW's only run. Jenna Balthazor also collected a pair of hits in five at-bats on the day. Kelly Pevely, Caitlyn DeLong, and Prestlee Cooper all collected a hit.
In the opener, IPFW was able to get the leadoff runner on in three of the innings, but were unable to push a run across.
Balthazor drew a leadoff walk in the top of the first before the next three Mastodon batters went down in order. A leadoff triple by OSU in the bottom of the first led to a run after the next batter singled.
DeLong singled to start the second, but again IPFW was unable to move the runner as pitcher Kaitlyn Biere held the Cowgirls off the scoreboard in the bottom half of the inning. After the 'Dons went down in order in the third, Oklahoma State scored three runs. Neal singled for the Mastodons with one out in the fourth before OSU tacked on another in run on a solo home run.
Biere stranded another Cowgirl runner in the fifth but was unable to keep their bats quiet in the sixth, as they scored three runs to end the game.
The nightcap saw OSU jump out to the early lead with runs in the first, second, and fifth innings. The Mastodons escaped further damage in the fifth as Sarah Lazarowich pitched out of no-out bases loaded situation.
IPFW got hits in the second, third, and fifth innings but were unable to score.
The 'Dons got on the board in the sixth inning after Balthazor led off the inning with a single and then stole second. After a walk to Taylor Gordy Prescott, Balthazor moved to third on a sacrifice bunt, and scored on a single through the right side by Neal.
The Cowgirls added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth. Down to their final at-bat, Prestlee Cooper led off the top of the seventh with an infield single for the 'Dons. From there, the Mastodons were unable get another runner on base.
IPFW closes out its trip to Texas as it takes on nationally ranked No. 6/4 Oklahoma in a doubleheader on February 28 beginning at 4 p.m. ET.
