2/6/2015 10:19:00 PM | Softball
MACON, Ga. - It was a tough start to the season for the IPFW softball team as they dropped two games at the Mercer Invitational, falling to Jacksonville State 7-0, and Mercer 11-1.
In the opener, the lone Mastodon hit came in the fifth on a single up the middle by Prestlee Cooper with a full count.
The Gamecocks opened the scoring in the third with four runs in the inning. JSU added two more in the fourth before scoring the final run in the sixth on a double.
In the second game of the day, the Mastodons fell behind the host Bears in the third inning as they plated five runs, including four on a grand slam.
IPFW scored its first run of the season in the top of the fourth. Emily Olszewski led off the inning with a walk, followed by a single from Morghyn Neal and a walk to Miranda Marion loaded the bases. Kelly Pevely drove in Olszewski on a sacrifice fly to left field, bringing home the first Mastodon run of 2015. Avery Nelson added a single but an IPFW runner was thrown out to end the inning.
Mercer added two runs in the fourth before scoring four more in the bottom of the fifth, including a game-ending three-run home run with two outs.
IPFW goes right back to work against Valparaiso on February 7 for a 10 a.m. game. The second game of the day will be at either 2:30 or 4:45 p.m. based on seeding from the first three games.
