Emily Olszewski and Caitlyn DeLong led the Mastodons with 3-for-5 performances at the plate. Olszewski also led the team with two runs scored. Morghyn Neal added a pair of hits in five plate appearances on the day.
In the morning game, Valparaiso jumped out to an early two-run lead with a one-out single. Jenna Balthazor led off the bottom half of the first with a single for the 'Dons. After a sacrifice bunt and single from Olszewski moved her to third, the freshman came around to score on a single to right field by Neal. Olszewski followed suit, scoring on an RBI groundout by Miranda Marion.
Valpo broke the game open in the third, plating four runs in the inning, all of which came with two outs. The Mastodons loaded the bases in the bottom of the fourth with two outs, but were unable to push a run across.
The Crusaders added three more in the fifth on a three-run home run, and a solo shot in the sixth. DeLong led off the bottom of the sixth with a double before three of the next four Mastodons were retired to end the game.
Making her first career start on the mound, freshman Kaitlin Kowalski threw three and two-third innings, allowing six earned runs in the loss.
In the game, DeLong, Neal, and Olszewski each tallied a pair of hits, both of DeLong's went for a double.
Game two saw IPFW take the lead in the top of the first. With two outs, Olszewski singled through the left side. Back-to-back Gamecock errors allowed Olszewski to score from second. Jacksonville State tied the game in the bottom of the first on a one-out single.
JSU added a run in the second, two more in the third, and four in the fourth. The 'Dons had base runners in the second and fifth innings but were unable to push a run across.
After surrendering a leadoff walk in the fifth, an IPFW error and a double ended the game in favor of the Gamecocks. In the circle, Kaitlyn Biere suffered her second loss of the season in three and one-third innings of work, surrendering seven earned runs.
IPFW closes out the Mercer Invitational with a rematch against Valparaiso at noon on February 8.
