Men's Tennis Drops Hard-Fought Battle with Phoenix
2/7/2015 3:20:00 PM | Men's Tennis
KALAMAZOO, Mich. - Despite its 6-1 final score, the IPFW men's tennis loss to Green Bay was anything but lopsided, as just one of the singles matches ended in a traditional set length, and all three doubles matches were by a 7-5 score in the Mastodons' loss to the Phoenix at the West Wills Athletic Club in Kalamazoo, Michigan.
"Today's score was not indicitave of how close our team was to winning the match today," said assistant coach Jonathan Batuello. "All three of the doubles matches were 7-5, so the deciding factor was just a hanful of points combined through the three. In singles we lose the first sets at two spots in close tiebreakers, and with wins there, we would have taken a one-point lead. This team is close, it just needs to win a few critical points here and there, and we win the close matches that we have fallen in."
The No. 3 doubles pair of Connor Andrews and Karl Wangensten-Oye fell 7-5 in the first completed doubles match, before Daniel Cardenas and Andres Cobos picked up a 7-5 win at No. 2 pairs to even the count; however, a 7-5 loss by Gerard Guell and Martin Muadi at No. 1 secured the doubles point for the Phoenix.
Guell fell at No. 1 by a 6-2, 6-0 score in the first completed singles match, before Wangensten-Oye dropped a 6-0, 7-5 match at No. 6 singles. Cobos' first set at No. 2 singles needed a tiebreaker, but the IPFW senior fell 7-6 (10-8), 6-1, giving Green Bay the deciding points for the team victory.
Cardenas also needed a tiebreaker, falling 7-6 (10-8), 6-3 at No. 3, before Carlos do Val picked up the team's lone singles win by a 6-4, 4-6, 1-0 (10-5) score at No. 4, while Muadi fell 3-6, 7-6 (8-2), 1-0 (10-5) at No. 5 singles.
The Mastodons return to Fort Wayne before taking to the roads again for a Sunday afternoon match-up with the Wright State Raiders starting at 1 p.m.
