DAYTON, Ohio - Behind five wins in singles play, the IPFW men's tennis team evened its record on the season at 4-4 with a 5-2 win over the Wright State Raiders on Sunday afternoon.
"The team had a great effort and resiliency today," said assistant coach Jonathan Batuello. "We didn't play our best in doubles and struggled at some spots to start in singles, but the team kept fighting and digging until they broke through. It was a great response to falling behind, to come back and beat a solid opponent."
The Mastodons and Raiders split the first two doubles matches, with IPFW winning with the No. 2 doubles team of Daniel Cardenas and Andres Cobos taking a 6-4 win. The Raiders took the hard-fought doubles point with a 7-6 (8-4) win at No. 1 pairs, giving the hosts a 1-0 lead in the team match.
The Mastodons quickly jumped ahead with a 6-2, 6-3 win by Gerard Guell at No. 1 singles, followed by a 1-6, 6-1, 6-1 victory by Andres Cobos at No. 2 singles, putting the visitors ahead on the team scoreboard 2-1. Wright State took the next completed match by a 7-6 (8-5), 6-2 score at No. 4 singles; however, that would be the last win by the hosts in the match.
Cardenas won won 7-6 (8-4), 3-6, 6-1 at No. 3 singles, before Martin Muadi took the team's victory-clinching match by a 6-2, 6-2 score at No. 5 singles. Karl Wangensten-Oye topped off the match with a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 6 singles, closing the door on the 5-2 Mastodon win.
The team gets a weekend break before taking to the road on February 20 and 21 at Marquette and UIC.
