Mastodons Open Summit League Play in Macomb

MACOMB, Ill. - The IPFW baseball team opens Summit League play in the coming weekend, facing off against the Western Illinois Leathernecks in a three-game series at Alfred D. Boyer Stadium.

IPFW comes into the weekend as one of the top hitting teams in the NCAA, and ranks fourth in slugging percentage (.503), fifth in batting average (.323), fifth in runs scored per game (8.4), and seventh in on-base percentage (.415).
Jackson Boyce leads the team with a Summit League-leading .438 batting average, as there are six regulars hitting over .300 on the season. Shane Trevino bats .375 while leading the Summit League with four home runs and 21 RBI's. Brandon Soat is second on the team in batting average (.390), RBI's (20), and runs scored (16). Evan VanSumeren leads the team with 18 runs scored, while hitting .310.
The pitching staff is led by Trevor Storie, who is 2-1 with a 5.59 ERA, striking out 12 batters in 19.1 innings of work. Evan Miller has struck out 23 batters in 17.1 innings of work, while standing second on the team's starters with a 6.75 ERA.

Western Illinois comes into the game with a 2-8 record after splitting a four-game series with the Evansville Aces a weekend earlier.
Leatherneck batters hit .210 on the season, and are led by Payton Jeffers who bats .364 while Jake Moore hits .304 for the year. JJ Reimer leads the team with two home runs and six RBI's.Chris Tschida has scored a team-best seven runs, while also leading the team with 10 hits.
The pitching staff is led by Joe Mortillaro who has a 2.64 ERA in 13.2 innings of work to go with 12 strikeouts, while giving out 10 walks. Preston Church - the weekends' game three starter - has a 1-2 record with a 3.50 ERA in 18 innings, striking out 18 and walking nine.
