Baseball Drops Summit League Opener to Leathernecks
3/13/2015 7:25:00 PM | Baseball
MACOMB, Ill. - A three-run first inning was too much to overcome in the Summit League opener for the IPFW baseball team, as the Mastodons fell 4-2 to the Leathernecks.
Brandon Soat was 2-for-4 for the Mastodons, as the team's other three hits came from three different batters. Kendall Whitman and Greg Kaiser each scored once, while Brock Logan drove in the team's only run.
Trevor Storie had his longest outing of the season, going six full innings as he scattered seven hits, and allowed four runs - only one earned - while striking out two and walking one.
Western Illinois opened the game with three runs in the bottom of the first, aided by two errors, making all three of the runs unearned. The hosts added an insurance run in the bottom of the third with a two-out double, putting the Leathernecks ahead 4-0, and would not trail in the game.
IPFW rallied with a run in the top of the fourth, starting with a Kaiser infield single, before the junior infielder stole second base. An error on the Leatherneck second baseman - off of the bat of Jonathan Valenzuela-Reece - saw Kaiser cross the plate for an unearned run.
The Mastodons continued the rally in the top of the eighth inning when Logan singled home Whitman with a single to center field. An inning later the Mastodons put a runner on third base after a hit by pitch, groundout, and wild pitch, but the runner was left stranded in the two-run Mastodon loss.
The teams return to action on Saturday for the second of three games in the weekend series, with the first pitch slated for 1 p.m. ET.
