Wells Pitches Mastodons to 6-3 Win over Leathernecks
3/14/2015 6:06:00 PM | Baseball
Wells improved to 2-2 on the season, pitching six innings where he scattered four hits, giving up one earned run and striking out six. Sean Herberger was 2-for-3 for the Mastodons at the plate, while Brandon Soat was 2-for-5.
For the second straight game, the Leathernecks took to the scoreboard first behind an unearned run in the bottom of the first inning, before adding to their lead with a run off of three hits and a walk; however, from there, Wells calmed down, and retired 12 of the next 13 batters he faced in the game.
The Mastodons answered the two-run deficit in the top of the third inning when Herberger opened the inning with a single, advanced to second on a passed ball, to third on a groundout, and then scored on a fielding error by the Leatherneck second baseman, cutting the deficit in half.
An inning later Brock Logan tied the score with a single to center field, scoring Kendall Whitman for his first of two runs scored on the day. A Herberger walk later that inning loaded the bases, where Lucas Salerno grounded into a fielder's choice, scoring Logan and giving the Mastodons their first lead of the series at 3-2.
In the top of the seventh inning the Mastodons doubled their run total in the game, the first run coming on a Shane Trevino sacrifice fly that was dropped by the Leatherneck left fielder, putting runners on first and second. On a double-steal attempt, the throw went to second base as Whitman slid into third base safely. On the ensuing run-down on Trevino between first and second base, Whitman snuck home, as the score distracted the defense enough to see Trevino slide safely into second base. Herberger followed with a single to left field, scoring Trevino, and giving the Mastodons their six runs for the game.
Western Illinois cut into the deficit with a run in the eighth, but that would be all that the hosts would get as the Mastodons forced Western Illinois into a game-ending double play.
Zach Dowden pitched an inning and two-thirds in relief, giving up just two hits and one run, while Jake Weber picked up his fourth save of the season, striking out one over an inning and a third.
Whitman scored twice, as each of the team's four RBI's came from different batters.
