Extra Innings Not Enough For Mastodons In Summit League Opener
3/21/2015 6:45:00 PM | Softball
OMAHA, Neb. - For the first time this season the IPFW softball team played an extra inning game, but the Mastodons were unable to hold off Omaha, falling in eight innings 2-1 in game one before dropping game two 8-0.
Jenna Balthazor led the 'Dons on the day, going 2-for-5 at the plate. Emily Olszewski and Whitney Ennis each collected a hit on the day. Ennis added a walk while earning IPFW's long RBI on the day.
The lone Mastodon run in game one came in the top of the fourth inning. With one out, Olszewski doubled down the left field line. One out later, Caitlyn DeLong reached on an Omaha error and Avery Nelson walked on four straight pitches to load the bases. Ennis came to the plate and drew a seven-pitch walk to bring in the first run of the game.
The Mavs tied the game in the bottom of the seventh on a leadoff triple and a one-out single to send the game to extra innings.
The 'Dons were retired in order in the top of the eighth and UNO drew a leadoff walk in the bottom half of the inning. After an IPFW error and a sacrifice bunt, a long single to left scored the game-winner for Omaha.
Kaitlyn Biere suffered the game one loss despite allowing just two earned runs on five hits. She tied a season-high with seven strikeouts in seven and one third innings of work.
Balthazor led off game two with an infield single, but that would be the lone hit for the Mastodons. The Mavericks jump out to the early lead scoring twice in the first inning. They added a run in the second, three in the third, and scored twice in the fifth to end the game.
Sarah Lazarowich took the loss in the circle for the 'Dons, pitching a complete game while allowing six earned runs and striking out a pair of UNO batters.
The final game of the series will be tomorrow, March 22, with first pitch set for noon ET.
