FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The IPFW softball team closed out its Summit League series with Western Illinois, falling 20-3 and 8-0.
Kelly Pevely and Prestlee Cooper each had a pair of hits on the afternoon. Pevely connected on a home run in game one while Cooper had a hit in each contest. Avery Nelson also went deep for the Mastodons in the first game while adding a pair of walks in game two.
In game one, Western Illinois jumped in front scoring three runs in the first inning. The Leathernecks added seven runs in the second and nine more in the third.
The 'Dons got on the board in the fourth with one away in the inning. Emily Olszewski drew a walk and stole second. Nelson then stepped to the plate and with a 2-1 count delivered on her team-leading third home run of the season to right-center. One pitch later Pevely delivering on her second home run of the season. IPFW loaded the bases with singles from Caitlyn DeLong, Whitney Ennis, and Cooper. The Mastodon rally stalled there as the final out of the inning was recorded.
WIU added a run in the top of the fifth as IPFW went down in order in the bottom of the inning to end the game.
Sarah Lazarowich took the loss for the 'Dons throwing 3 2/3 innings allowing five earned runs on eight hits. Kaitlin Kowalski pitched 1 1/3 innings in relief, surrendering four earned runs on six hits.
IPFW had an opportunity to score first in game two as Jenna Balthazor singled and Nelson drew a walk in the bottom of the first but the team was unable to bring home a run. The Mastodons stranded two more runners in the bottom of the second as Morghyn Neal singled and Cooper doubled.
In the top of the third Western Illinois used the long ball to its advantage with a grand slam and three-run shot. The Leathernecks added one more run in the fourth on an IPFW error.
The 'Dons fought to extend the game in the bottom of the fifth as Taylor Gordy Prescott roped a double and advanced to third on a wild pitch. The final two outs were recorded before the Mastodons could score, ending the game.
In the circle, Kaitlyn Biere suffered the loss, tossing a complete game and scattering seven hits.
IPFW returns to the diamond on April 1 to host a doubleheader against Western Michigan beginning at 3 p.m.
