Baseball Splits with Butler

Kendall Whitman batted .571 on the day, scoring twice, while Shane Trevino batted .444 with two home runs and seven RBI's.
In the opener, the Bulldogs scored three times in the bottom of the first inning before the Mastodons responded with three runs in the top of the second. The inning started with two walks and a single to load the bases with one out, before Jackson Boyce hit a sacrifice fly to score Brock Logan. Evan VanSumeren responded a batter later with a two-run single to knot the game at three runs apiece.
After Butler re-took the lead with a run in the bottom of the second inning, as the Mastodons re-took the lead with three runs in the top of the fourth, the first on a VanSumeren single that scored Jonathan Valenzuela-Reece, which was followed by a Brandon Soat two-run single.
Another Butler three-run inning came in the bottom of the fifth, before IPFW scored three more times in the bottom of the seventh with the first of two Trevino home runs on the day. An inning later Whitman singled home VanSumeren, giving IPFW a 10-7 advantage. The Bulldogs cut into the gap with a run in the bottom of the eighth, giving the game its 10-8 final score.
VanSumeren and Whitman each had three hits, as Soat, Trevino, and Valenzuela-Reece picked up two hits apiece. VanSumeren and Valenzuela-Reece each scored twice while VanSumeren and Trevino driving in three.
Zach Dowden picked up the win in relief, pitching an inning and a third, striking out one. Evan Miller started the game, and lasted four and two-thirds of an inning, scattering four hits and striking out six batters. Jake Weber picked up his third save of the season, pitching the final two and a third inning, striking out two.
Butler jumped out to a 3-0 lead with a trio of runs in the bottom of the third inning, and the Bulldogs kept their lead until the top of the sixth inning.
In the top of the sixth, Jon Timmermen and VanSumeren opened with a single, before Whitman was hit by a pitch to load the bases, setting the table for Trevino who hit a grand slam over the left field wall, giving the Mastodons a 4-3 lead. After a strikeout, Greg Kaiser homered to center field, giving IPFW a five-run inning.
A Soat double in the top of the seventh scored Zak Kellogg, and put IPFW ahead 6-3; however, two runs in the bottom of the seventh and eighth innings gave the hosts a 7-6 victory.
Trevino and Kellogg each went 2-for-4 in the game, while Trevino drove in four.
Trevor Storie pitched the first five and two-thirds inning, striking out five and giving up seven hits. Brandon Pease picked up the loss, pitching the final inning and a third, striking out two batters.
The split put the Mastodons at 9-5 on the season, and the team will face off against Ohio State in a mid-week contest on March 10 with a 5:05 p.m. first pitch.
