Gukeisen Homers As Softball Drops Doubleheader

Miranda Marion led the Mastodons at the dish going 2 for 4 with a pair of RBI, a double, and a walk. Emily Olszewski also collected a pair of hits on the afternoon, going 2 for 6, including a double, while driving in a run. Hailey Gukeisen connected on her first home run of the season to account for the other IPFW RBI.
In the opener, South Dakota plated a run in the bottom of the first but IPFW starter Kaitlyn Biere escaped a one-out bases loaded jam by striking out a pair of Coyote batters looking. USD added a run in the second with two outs.
The Mastodons tied the game in the top of the third with two outs. Balthazor led off the inning with a single to left and stole second. After the next two batters were retired, Olszewski singled to right center to score Balthazor. Marion followed with an RBI double over the left fielder's head. Neal added a single but the final out was recorded before the 'Dons could plate another run.
The Coyotes broke the tie game with two runs in the third and four more in the fourth. USD scored twice in the bottom of the fifth to bring the game to a close.
Biere took the loss in the circle for the Mastodons, throwing a complete game while striking out three.
Game two saw IPFW jump out to the early lead in the top of the first. With one out, Olszewski doubled to left center. After a wild pitch moved her to third, Olszewski scored on a single by Marion. In the bottom half of the inning USD scored three run to take the lead.
South Dakota extended its lead with five runs in the second, four in the third, and eight more in the fourth.
The 'Dons put one final run on the scoreboard in the top of the fifth. With one out in the inning, pinch hitter Gukeisen stepped in and with a 3-2 count took the seventh pitch of the at-bat over the left field fence for her first career home run.
Sarah Lazarowich suffered the loss for IPFW, throwing 2 1-3 innings allowing nine earned runs on 11 hits. Avery Nelson made a return to action, pitching the final 1 2-3 and surrendering eight runs on six hits.
