Big Fourth Inning Not Enough For Mastodons in Series Finale

Five different Mastodon starters collected a hit on the afternoon. Emily Olszewski led the way for the 'Dons going 1 for 3, driving in two runs while scoring another. Miranda Marion and Morghyn Neal each finished with a hit and an RBI. Prestlee Cooper added a run and a hit while Kelly Pevely delivered the other hit for the 'Dons.
For the second time in the series, IPFW got the scoring started in the top of the third inning with four runs. Cooper led off the inning by reaching on an error and Lindsay Burke reached on a second USD error. The Mastodons then loaded the bases when Taylor Gordy Prescott was hit by a pitch. Olszewski stepped in the box and drove the first pitch she saw up the middle to bring home Cooper and Burke. The Coyote center fielder bobbled the ball, allowing Gordy Prescott and Olszewski to advance to second and third. Marion grounded out to the pitcher, scoring Gordy Prescott. Neal followed with a single up the middle to plate Olszewski.
South Dakota responded with three runs in the bottom of the third, all coming on home runs with two outs. Cooper led off the top of the fourth for the 'Dons with an infield single, but that would be the final baserunner to reach for the Mastodons.
The Coyotes scored six runs in the bottom of the fourth, all of which came with less than two outs. USD ended the game in the fifth with a two-run home run followed by a solo shot.
In the circle for the 'Dons, Kaitlyn Biere took the loss pitching a complete game with two strikeouts.
IPFW returns to action on April 15 at Purdue for a 6 p.m. first pitch.
