Kaiser Hits Grand Slam as Mastodons Fall at Purdue

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - IPFW shortstop Greg Kaiser hit a fourth-inning grand slam; however, the Purdue Boilermaker early lead was too much to overcome as the Mastodons fell to their in-state foe by a 14-5 final score on Wednesday evening.
Each of IPFW's five hits came from different batters in the game, as Shane Trevino scored twice, and Kaiser drove in four.
Purdue jumped out quickly in the game, scoring nine runs over the first three innings of the contest.
With the Mastodons trailing, the visitors manufactured a bases-loaded situation behind a walk to Kendall Whitman, an error that saw Trevino reach base, and a walk to Brock Logan, before Kaiser hit his fifth home run of the season and the third grand slam for IPFW this season, cutting the gap to five at 9-4.
Purdue answered the Mastodon four-run inning with one of their own, before both teams put up zeroes on the scoreboard for the fifth inning.,
Following the scoreless frame, the Mastodons put together back-to-back batters to reach base, starting with a leadoff walk to Trevino, before Logan doubled to right-center field, chasing Trevino across the plate from first; however, that would be all the Mastodons would score, as the team trailed 13-5 after five and a half innings.Purdue closed the scoring with a solitary run in the seventh inning, giving the game its 14-5 final score.,
Brandon Pease picked up the loss, giving up five runs over an inning and a third as the Mastodons used six different pitchers in the game.
The Mastodons return to action on Friday, April 17 when the squad opens the second half of the Summit League schedule with a 3 p.m. first pitch against the Western Illinois Leathernecks.
