
Men's Tennis Clinches Third Seed with Win Against Jackrabbits

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The IPFW men's tennis team clinched the No. 3 seed in the upcoming Summit League Tournament following a 4-3 win over the South Dakota State Jackrabbits on Sunday afternoon.
"This was a tough and great match to end the regular season," said IPFW tennis assistant coach Jon Batuello. "This is what the matches are going to be like this upcoming weekend, and for our players to fight and dig for this win was great. We played some of our best doubles of the year, held off match-points at one singles to get the win, and really had solid play across the board to et a win against a very good conference opponent. this is great momentum heading into the Championships."
The Mastodons swept through doubles, taking a quick 8-1 win at No. 2 pairs from Andres Cobos and Daniel Cardenas, before the No. 1 team of Gerard Guell and Martin Muadi won 8-3 to secure the doubles point for the Mastodons. Connor Andrews and Derek Romer completed the IPFW sweep with an 8-7 (7-2) win at No. 3 pairs.
The doubles win by Cobos gave him 65 for his career, a new program record, passing Daniel Kang, and gives him 134 career overall wins.
Heading into singles, the Mastodons jumped ahead 2-0 with an Andres Cobos 7-6, 6-3 win at No. 2. South Dakota State rebounded with wins at No. 4 singles and No. 3 singles, before Guell rebounded from falling 6-2 in the opening set to take the final two sets by scores of 7-6 and 6-1, putting IPFW ahead 3-2 with two matches - No. 5 and No. 6 - to play.
Karl Wangensten-Oye needed a tiebreaker to take the first set, and out-lasted Mateus Moreira at No. 5 singles by a 7-6 (7-1), 6-4 final score, clinching the match victory for IPFW. Connor Andrews fell 7-5, 7-6 (7-3) in a battle at No. 6 singles, giving the match its 4-3 final score.
The Mastodons next take on the Western Illinois Leathernecks in the first round of the 2015 Summit League Championships, which will be played in Fort Wayne.
