Whitman Slams IPFW into Wins Record and Tournament Berth
5/14/2015 9:20:00 PM | Baseball
With the win, the Mastodons pass the teams from the 1998 and 1994 seasons that each had 25 wins, and the team's berth into the Summit League Tournament is the second straight - both times as the No. 3 seed.
Shane Trevino went 2-for-4 for IPFW, while the team's other four hits came from four different batters. Each of the team's seven runs scored came from a different player, including Brandon Soat who scored his 50th run of the season, becoming just the third player in program history to reach that season milestone.
After a scoreless first inning, the Mastodon offense came alive, when with two outs and a runner on base Jackson Boyce drew a walk to put two runners on, before a Soat single scored Shannon Baker who walked earlier in the inning. Evan VanSumeren walked to load the bases, as Whitman took the first pitch he saw and put it over the wall in right field, putting the visitors ahead 5-0.
South Dakota State snapped the shutout attempt with a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the fourth, before IPFW starting pitcher Evan Miller struck out leadoff hitter Paul Jacobson to end the inning and keep the Mastodons with a four-run margin.
In the top of the seventh inning IPFW reached the scoreboard again, the first run of the frame coming with a Lucas Salerno sacrifice fly that scored Trevino, before the Mastodons drew three consecutive walks, the final one to Boyce with the bases loaded to give IPFW its seventh and final run of the game.
A leadoff triple for the Jackrabbits scored on a sacrifice fly, but the hosts could get no closer in the game, as the Mastodons secured its record-breaking win.
Evan Miller pitched the first four innings of the game, and was pulled as part of a plan to rest the Mastodon starter for the upcoming League tournament. Miller struck out four batters, his 88th of the season, which is the second-most in a season in program history. Miller scattered three hits and gave up one earned run.
Cody O'Neal struck out five in 3-2/3 inning on the mound, including striking out the side in the fifth inning on just 10 total pitches. Jake Weber closed the game, pitching the final 1-1/3, striking out two and not allowing a run.
South Dakota State starter and ace Adam Bray - who was scheduled to pitch a small portion of the game - was chased from the game after 1-2/3 of an inning, where he walked four and gave up five runs.
The teams return to action on Friday, May 15, in a 3 p.m. first pitch at Erv Huether Field.
