The Mastodons return to Sioux Falls Stadium on Thursday afternoon in a 3 p.m. elimination game against the North Dakota State Bison, while South Dakota State will play Oral Roberts in an 8 p.m. first pitch.
Brandon Soat went 2-for-3 for the Mastodons, hitting a double - his 19th of the season - and a two-run home run. His two runs give him 52 for the season, second most in program history, and one away from tying Terry Johnson's 1997 total of 53.
Evan VanSumeren went 2-for-4, including driving in the team's other run with a groundout. Jackson Boyce scored the third and final run of the game for the Mastodons, scoring after drawing a walk in the eighth inning. Kendall Whitman reached base twice in the game, both times when he was hit by a pitch, giving him 19 on the season, one away from tying the single-season school record of 20 set by Ryan Keena in 2005.
IPFW struggled to get its bats working to start the game, as the squad went eight-up, eight-down through the first two-plus innings, as the host Jackrabbits scored once in the first inning and once in the second to push ahead 2-0 through the first three innings of the game.
The Mastodons' first hit of the game came with two outs in the third inning when Jackson Boyce hit an infield single. Brandon Soat followed with a walk, as Evan VanSumeren hit a second infield single; however, a fly-out to left field ended the scoring threat for IPFW. South Dakota State scored two times in the bottom of the third, and three more times in the bottom of the fourth, putting the hosts on the scoreboard ahead 7-0 after four innings.
IPFW pitcher Brandon Pease came in for a relief appearance, and sat the first six Jackrabbits down in order, keeping South Dakota State off of the scoreboard for the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings.
In between the Pease shutout innings, the Mastodons were able to put a dent on their deficit, starting with Soat's 19th double of the season, before the junior was pushed to third on a wild pitch, and scored on a VanSumeren groundout.
The Mastodons added two more runs in the top of the eighth on a two-run Soat home run, scoring himself an Jackson Boyce, cutting the gap to four at 7-3. IPFW continued to threaten with a double from VanSumeren and a hit by pitch to Whitman - his second of the game; however, a strikeout and fly out closed the door on addition runs for the Blue and White.,
After surrendering just a hit in the bottom of the eighth, IPFW once again put pressure on the Jackrabbits, as Shannon Baker - who drew a one-out walk - advanced to second on a wild pitch and to third on a passed ball; however, could not come around to score, as South Dakota State held on for the 7-3 final score.
IPFW starter Evan Miller lasted four innings, striking out five, becoming the program's single-season strikeout leader in the process. Miller gave up eight hits and seven runs, all earned. Relief pitcher Brandon Pease pitched the remaining four innings of the game, scattering two hits, struck out two and did not allow a walk or a run.
SDSU's Adam Bray picked up the win on the mound, pitching 7-1/3 of an inning, striking out seven and giving up three earned runs.,
