IPFW will return to action on Friday, May 22, in a 6 p.m. ET first pitch against the loser of the evening's Oral Roberts/South Dakota State battle.
Greg Kaiser set the program's single-season record with his 117th total base of the season, while Brandon Soat scored in the fourth inning, giving him his 53rd run of the season, tied for the single-season record in that category.,
Shane Trevino had a game-high four hits in the win, while Evan VanSumeren, Kendall Whitman, Kaiser, and Jonathan Valenzuela-Reece each had three hits in the victory. Kaiser scored four times, as Whitman crossed the plate three times and VanSumeren and Trevino each scored twice. Kaiser and Valenzuela-Reece each drove in four runs, while Whitman, Trevino, and Shannon Baker each chased home two.
Ryan Wells improved to 5-6, pitching seven innings while striking out four and giving up five hits and three earned runs. Cody O'Neal and Kyle Sorensen each pitched an inning in relief.
The Bison struck first in the game, scoring in the top of the first inning off of a hit-by-pitch and a one-out triple, putting the guests on the scoreboard ahead 1-0.
The Mastodons struck back in the bottom of the second inning, as Valenzuela-Reece hit a two-out infield single, before Jackson Boyce walked to put runners on first and second. Soat followed with a ground ball to the Bison first baseman, whose throw to a covering pitcher went behind the fielder for an error, and allowed Valenzuela-Reece to score from second, knotting the game at one run apiece.
Following the run-scoring first inning, Wells settled down, and went 17 batters without giving up a hit, only allowing a walk and an error to reach base until the sixth inning.
Whitman opened the third inning with a single to left field, before Trevino doubled to right-center field to put runners on second and third. Kaiser followed a batter later with his ninth home run of the season over the left field wall, putting the Mastodons ahead 4-1 after three frames.
After a top of the fourth inning in which Wells sat the Bison down in order, IPFW sent 10 batters to the plate, scoring six runs on four hits and an error. Boyce and Soat opened the inning with back-to-back walks before VanSumeren hit a single to load the bases. Following a pitching change, Whitman singled home the first two batters of the inning, with Trevino following with an RBI single to chase home VanSumeren. Kaiser reached on a fielder's choice that erased Trevino, as Logan was hit by a pitch to re-load the bases. Baker hit an RBI groundout to score Whitman and put IPFW ahead 8-1, before Valenzuela-Reece scored Kaiser and Logan, and putting the Mastodons into double-digit runs.
Neither team could get any momentum in the fifth inning, as IPFW scored in the sixth as part of three consecutive singles the latter single from Baker scored Kaiser.
North Dakota State scored twice in the top of the seventh inning when Juan Gamez hit a two-run home run, but the Mastodons countered with four runs in the bottom half of the inning.
VanSumeren, Whitman, Trevino, and Kaiser hit singles in straight at-bats, Kaiser's securing the school total bases record. Trevino's single scored VanSumeren, while Kaiser's scored Whitman. After an infield fly, Baker walked to load the bases, before Valenzuela-Reece hit a two-run single, giving IPFW its 15th and final run of the game.
The Bison scored twice in the eighth inning; however, the 12-run margin proved too much to overcome in the Mastodon victory.
David Ernst picked up the loss, pitching the first three innings of the game, striking out two and giving up seven runs - six earned.,
