Soat Scores Three Times as Mastodons Fall in Pair to Golden Eagles
5/8/2015 7:37:00 PM | Baseball
Brandon Soat went 3-for-6 at the plate over the two games, scoring three runs and hitting two doubles - moving him into a tie for second place in school history for single-season doubles, behind only Chris Gottschall's from 2009. Shane Trevino was 3-for-8, as Shannon Baker finished 2-for-6.,
In the opener Oral Roberts jumped out quickly with three runs in the top of the first inning, before the Mastodons answered back in the bottom half of the inning, starting with a Soat walk, before a wild pitch moved Soat to second, an Evan VanSumeren single pushed him to third, before Kendall Whitman hit his first of two sacrifice flies in the game, closing the gap to two at 3-1. The visitors added two runs in the top of the second to take a 5-1 lead, including the run that would eventually be the game-winner.
Lucas Salerno opened the second inning with a solo home run - his second straight game with a longball - cutting the gap to 5-2; however, ORU added two more runs in the top of the third to take the margin to 7-2.
A Soat triple opened the bottom of the third inning, before Whitman hit his second sacrifice fly in as many plate appearances. The Whitman run cut the gap to 7-3, but would be the team's final run of the contest, as ORU added three runs in the top of the fourth, two in the top of the sixth, and one more in the top of the seventh as the game was stopped after seven innings on the run rule.
Each of IPFW's six hits in the opening game came from different batters, with Soat scoring twice. Whitman drove in two runs, while Salerno chased home a single run on his solo home run.
Trevor Storie picked up the loss, falling to 4-6 on the season, as he gave up seven earned runs in three and a third inning, striking out two and walking three. Nate White pitched two innings in relief, striking out two, while Kyle Sorensen finished the game for the Mastodons.
In the second game of the day, IPFW and Oral Roberts opened with a pitcher's duel, with neither team able to find the scoreboard until the top of the fourth inning when the visiting Golden Eagles put up four runs.
The IPFW offense was stymied until the seventh inning when Soat hit a one-out double, which was followed by an RBI single by VanSumeren, cutting into the Oral Roberts advantage by a 4-1 score.
After going quietly in the top of the eighth, Oral Roberts brought in their closer in the bottom of the eighth, before the Mastodons started their rally. Greg Kaiser opened the inning with an infield single, before Salerno walked. After a full-count strikeout, Jonathan Valenzuela-Reece walked on four pitches to load the bases. Pinch hitter Brock Logan followed with a single through the right side to score Kaiser, as Salerno scored two pitches later on a wild pitch. With first base open, Soat was intentionally walked before a foul-out and fly-out ended the threat.
Relief pitcher Jake Weber allows just a one-out single, before a pop-up and strikeout end the half of the inning for the Mastodons. Trevino opened the bottom of the ninth with a single, before a fly-out and pop-up put two outs on the board, before Baker drew a four-pitch walk; however, ORU closer Anthony Sequeira drew a strikeout to close the door on the game.
Trevino was 3-for-5 in the game, while Soat and Baker were each 2-for-4. Valenzuela-Reece drew a pair of walks, as each of the team's runs came from a different batter. Ryan Wells fell to 4-6 on the season as he went four innings, giving up seven hits and four earned runs, striking out four. Relief pitcher Cody O'Neal went four innings and gave up just a single hit while striking out three, with Weber striking out two in his one-inning appearance.
The teams meet back for the third and final game of the series in a newly re-scheduled noon first pitch, with the team's senior day celebrations to take place just before the contest.
