Big Inning Drops Mastodons Against Golden Eagles on Senior Day
5/9/2015 3:25:00 PM | Baseball
Lucas Salerno went 2-for-3 with a second-inning double, while the team's other four hits in the game came from four different players. Brandon Soat, Greg Kaiser, and Salerno each scored once, while Kendall Whitman, Shannon Baker, and Jon Timmerman each drove in a run.
IPFW came out of the gate quickly on senior day, and after a 1-2-3 inning at the top of the first, Soat opened the bottom half with a walk, before advancing to third when a throw from Oral Roberts to put out of the lead runner of a sacrifice bunt sailed into center field, putting runners on the corners with no outs. Whitman answered with a single to left field to score Soat, but a strikeout and a double play ended the inning before the Mastodons could do more damage.
An inning later Salerno opened the frame with a double off of the wall in center field, was moved to third on a groundout from Baker, and scored when Timmerman singled up the middle.
After holding Oral Roberts without a hit for the first three innings of the game, the Golden Eagles scored twice in the top of the fourth, and two more times in the top of the sixth to give the visitors a 4-2 advantage.
In the bottom of the sixth Kaiser hit a one-out double down the left field line, which was followed two batters later by a double from Baker to score Kaiser, and cut the gap to one at 4-3. The Golden Eagles followed by using three IPFW errors to score 10 runs on six hits, giving the game its 11-run margin, and securing the regular season Summit League title for Oral Roberts.
Evan Miller picked up the loss, going five and two-thirds of an inning, striking out three and giving up four earned runs. Jake Weber, Cody O'Neal, and Dane Davis each saw time on the mound for IPFW in the seventh inning.
The Mastodons return to action on Thursday, May 14, when the team takes on the Jackrabbits of South Dakota State in the first game of a three-game series at 4 p.m. ET.
