Mastodons Drop Hard Fought Match to Cardinals

MUNCIE, Ind. - For the third consecutive season, and fourth time in six years, the IPFW and Ball State women's volleyball I-69 rivalry match went to five sets, but it was not the Mastodons night as they fell to the Cardinals 3-2 (25-20, 27-25, 11-25, 25-27, 15-9).
Somer Johnson earned her fourth consecutive double-double with a match-high 20 kills and 12 digs. Madison Jaqua also went for a double-double with a match-high 21 digs to go along with 38 assists.
Nicole Rightnowar finished the match with 10 kills while Sarah Heckman added eight, and Natalie Seiler seven. Seiler led the 'Dons with four blocks, including two solo. Olivia Hahn had 18 digs on the night with Este Stoffel making eight. Hahn also had a career- and match-high four aces.
The two sides battled through the opening points of the first set as they tied the score five times. After Ball State scored back-to-back points to lead 7-5, the Cardinals used a three-point run to extend their lead and eventually take the set.
The second set saw 10 tie scores as the teams traded early leads. With IPFW up 4-3, Ball State scored five consecutive points to lead 8-4. The 'Dons battled back to tie the score at 13-13 on an ace from Johnson. Back-to-back Mastodon points gave them a 15-14 lead. After BSU regained the lead, IPFW fought off a pair of set points. With the score tied 25-25, Ball State was able to take the final two points to win the set.
With the score knotted 7-7 in the third set, the Mastodons began to run away with it, scoring the next five points. The 'Dons closed out the frame by winning 10 of the final 11 points.
The I-69 rivalry showed what it means to both teams in the fourth set as the sides exchanged seven leads and tied the score 15 times. Early in the set IPFW used a six-point run to take an 11-9 advantage. From there, neither team held more than a two-point lead. Each side fought off a set point, but it was Hahn coming through for the Mastodons by closing out the set with an ace.
The start of the fifth set remained competitive as the two teams exchanged early leads. With the score tied 7-7, the 'Dons were unable hold off the Cardinals as they scored eight of the final 10 points to take the match.
IPFW returns to the court for the Miami Invitational Presented by Best Western Sycamore Inn September 18-19 where the Mastodons begin play against Green Bay at 4:30 p.m. on Friday.
