Men's Preview:
After placing fifth out of eight teams at the Summit League Conference Championships, the Fort Wayne men's cross country team heads to Madison, Wisconsin for the NCAA Great Lakes Regionals. The 'Dons will send nine runners to this year's meet held at the Thomas Zimmer Championship Course. At this event last year, the Mastodons were led by Bret Unger with a time of 34:02.6 and Logan Kitchen with a time of 34:48.9. In addition, Connor Shaffer, Gabe O'Keefe, and Nathan Clary will all be returning to the Regional. Newcomers to the event include freshmen Alex Barton, Robert Peck, Austin Rockstroh and Sam Williamson.
Women's Preview:
Also following a fifth place finish at the conference championships, the Fort Wayne Women's cross country team will send eight runners to Madison this weekend for the NCAA Great Lakes Regionals. Leading the 'Dons at this event last year were Rebecca Sippel and Emma Rafuse, running times of 23:05.0 and 23:23.7, respectively. Returning to this year's event are senior Rachel Kacer and sophomores Hannah Aschliman, Caitlyn Kiekhaefer, Emma Rafuse, and Rebecca Sippel. Running in the Regionals for the first time are freshmen Danielle Frank, Morgan Blyly and Kailee Schoof.
Format:
The NCAA Great Lakes Regional will feature runners from 34 teams spanning four states (Wisconsin, Michigan, Indiana and Ohio). A total of 31 teams will qualify for the NCAA Championships in Terre Haute, Ind., on Nov. 19. The top two teams at each of the nine regional meets automatically qualify, leaving 13 at-large bids. The selection process looks at each team's performance in 2016, beginning after Sept. 26, along with their finish at the NCAA Regional. Individually, 38 additional athletes per gender will qualify and the top four runners at each regional not on a qualifying team will automatically be selected.
