HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Senior Evan VanSumeren had four hits, including a home run, to lead IPFW to a season-opening 9-7 non-conference baseball victory at Alabama A&M University of the Southwestern Athletic Conference Friday at Bulldog Field in Huntsville, Alabama. Junior Jackson Boyce and senior Brandon Soat each had two hits and two RBIs for the visiting Mastodons (1-0), who collected 13 hits while junior Jordan Martin earned the pitching win in relief, and redshirt-junior Jake Weber collected a save. IPFW and Alabama A&M (0-1) will play a doubleheader Saturday, February 20 in Huntsville at 1 p.m.
IPFW scored a run on two hits and a fielding error in the first inning, as Soat (2-5, 2 RBIs) singled to open the game and later crossed the plate, unearned, courtesy a bases-loaded walk to senior Grant Wilson (1-3, RBI). The Mastodons added two runs on four hits in the second, getting an RBI double from Soat to score Boyce (2-3, 2 RBIs), who had singled and stole both second and third base, while senior Kendall Whitman (1-5, RBI) added an RBI double, as well, plating VanSumeren (4-5, RBI), who had singled and stole second. IPFW scored two more runs on two hits and another fielding error in the third, as redshirt-sophomore Shannon Baker (1-2, RBI) contributed an RBI single to score senior Greg Kaiser (1-3), who singled and stole second, while Boyce added a RBI sacrifice fly to move Baker across the plate.
IPFW added a run in the fourth on VanSumeren's solo homer to right field to open the inning. The Mastodons pushed across three more runs on three hits in the sixth, including another solo home run while leading off, this time from redshirt-senior Shane Trevino (1-6, RBI). Boyce had an RBI single to score Kaiser, who had been hit by a pitch, and Soat drew a bases-loaded walk to plate Wilson, who had doubled – giving IPFW a 9-5 advantage in the middle of the sixth.
Sophomore Evan Miller started for IPFW and pitched the first 4.2 innings, yielding four hits and five runs, three earned, with six strikeouts and three walks. Martin (1-0) tossed 2.0 innings of middle relief, allowing three hits and two earned runs with two strikeouts and two walks. Redshirt-sophomore Brandon Phelps pitched 1.1 scoreless innings, yielding one hit with one strikeout and one walk. Weber (1) went the final shutout and hitless inning with one strikeout for the save.
Alabama A&M was led offensively by Nolan Ramsey (2-5, 3 RBIs) with two hits and three RBIs, including a two-run homer in the first inning. Saige Benson (2-4, RBI) added two hits and an RBI, while Darren White (1-4, 2 RBIs) had a hit and two RBIs for the Bulldogs, who scored two runs in the first and fourth innings, and single runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings.
