GULFPORT, Miss. - The IPFW softball team dropped a pair of games to open the Mississippi Gulf Coast Softball Classic, falling to Incarnate Word 5-1 and Nicholls State 3-2. The Mastodons wrap up the tournament with a pair of games tomorrow, February 27, against Jackson State at 11 a.m. ET and Southeastern Louisiana at 1:30 p.m. ET.
Sierra Miranda led the way for the 'Dons on the day, going 4 for 6 at the plate with a triple, an RBI, and a run scored. Emily Olszewski and Kristen Zarate also collected a pair of hits on the day. Zarate and Amber Davis each drove in a run.
The morning game saw Incarnate Word jump out to an early lead with a RBI double in the top of the second. The Cardinals added to their lead with a three-run home run in the third.
The Mastodons got on the scoreboard in the bottom half of the third. Olszewski led off the inning with a single. After a pair of groundouts moved her to third, she scored on an RBI single to left by Davis. Incarnate Word tacked on one more run in the fourth as the 'Dons were unable to score again.
Demitra Burns took the loss in the circle, throwing five innings and allowing five runs, four earned, on six hits. Elizabeth Snodgrass came on to pitch two perfect innings of relief, not allowing a runner to reach base.
The Mastodons fell behind early again in the nightcap, as Nicholls State scored a run in the first and another in the third. The 'Dons scored both of their runs in the top of the fourth. With one out, Davis drew a walk and Miranda followed with a triple. On the next pitch, Zarate delivered a double to score Miranda and tie the game.
With the game still tied in the bottom of the seventh, IPFW starting pitcher Sarah Lazarowich allowed a leadoff walk. That runner was quickly erased as Davis picked her off at first. It would not go the Mastodon's way from there as an error and a single pushed across the winning run for the Colonels.
Lazarowich pitched a complete game, 6 1-3 innings, allowing one earned run on eight hits, and striking out four batters.
