ATHENS, Ohio – Senior Evan VanSumeren collected three hits and scored two runs, and redshirt-sophomore Brock Logan added two hits and two RBIs, to lead IPFW to a 7-1 non-conference baseball victory at Ohio University of the Mid-American Conference Friday at Bob Wren Stadium in Athens, Ohio. Sophomore Evan Miller gained the pitching win for the Mastodons (9-5) with six strong innings. Expected weather in Southeastern Ohio on Sunday has modified the weekend schedule for the second time in two days … IPFW and the host Bobcats (5-8) will now play a doubleheader Saturday at 11 a.m. to complete the three-game series.
IPFW scored two runs in the second inning on a pair of RBI ground ball outs from senior Jonathan Valenzuela-Reece (0-5, RBI) and redshirt-sophomore Shannon Baker (1-3, RBI), respectively. Senior Kendall Whitman (2-2, RBI) and Logan (2-5, 2 RBIs) each crossed the plate during the at-bat after a walk to Whitman and a single by Logan.
The Mastodons added a run in the third when VanSumeren (3-5) singled and later scored via a run-scoring single by Whitman.
IPFW scored four runs in the ninth inning, beginning with an RBI single from senior Brandon Soat (1-5, RBI) that plated Baker, who had doubled down the left field line to open the frame. Redshirt-senior Greg Kaiser (0-3, RBI) added a sacrifice fly to right field that scored Soat, while Logan completed the scoring with a two-run single that drove home VanSumeren and redshirt-senior Shane Trevino (1-4), who had each reached base on singles.
Miller (2-0) started for IPFW and pitched the first 6.0 innings for the victory, scattering four hits and one unearned run with eight strikeouts and four walks. Junior Jordan Martin tossed 2.0 scoreless innings, yielding one hit with four strikeouts and no walks, while redshirt-junior Jake Weber pitched the final shutout inning, allowing one hit with one strikeout and no walks.
Ohio was led offensively by Cody Gaertner (2-4) with two hits, while Jake Miller (1-3) started on the mound for the Bobcats and pitched the first 5.1 innings in the loss, allowing four hits and three earned runs with two strikeouts and five walks.
