Softball Takes Pair in First Day of Showcase

Taylor Lyman had herself a day with the three hits on the day, including the two RBI walk-off double to end the first game. Sierra Miranda and Lauren Watson both had four hits on the day while Kelly Pevely added three hits for IPFW. Sydney Windlan, Emily Olszewski, Jessica Murray, and Jenna Bathlazor all had two hits at the plate for the 'Dons during the days action.
In game one, the Mastodons got on the scoreboard early by an error made by UMass Lowell in the first inning, scoring Watson. The River Hawks would put up four runs in the third inning but IPFW would come right back in the bottom of the fourth when a Watson single through the left side would score Windlan and Lyman. The scoring continued in the fourth for the 'Dons when Balthazor would cross the plate on a wild pitch by the River Hawks.
UMass Lowell would take back the lead in the top of the sixth with an RBI single. In the seventh, Amber Davis would get on a hit by pitch, then Davis would steal second. Miranda would single to left keeping Davis at second. Windlan would then reach on a bunt single, advancing Davis to third and Miranda to second. Lyman would come up to the plate and blast a double over the right fielder's head to score Davis and Miranda.
Elizabeth Snodgrass started on the mound for IPFW and gave up four runs, three earned, in three innings of work. Demitra Burns came in and received the win after pitching four innings and giving up only one earned run.
In game two, the Mastodons made the first notch on the scoreboard with a Murray RBI single to center scoring Watson. Hartford would punch back in the bottom of the first scoring two runs to take the lead. The flood gates would open for IPFW in the third, first with an Olszewski bunt single to score Balthazor from third. Then, Pevely would knock in two more with a single through the left side and a walk by Windlan would bring in one more. Lyman would finish the scoring in the third with a two RBI single that would score Davis and Miranda.
In the fifth and sixth, the 'Dons would have their way again. A single by Windlan in the fifth scored Miranda from second and then Windlan would score when Watson reached base by a Hartford error. In the sixth, IPFW would add three more runs off a Miranda sac fly, a Lyman RBI single through the left side, and a Balthazor RBI single through the right side. Hartford would manage one more run in the bottom of the sixth before the game would come to close.
Sarah Lazarowich pitched the whole game for the 'Dons giving up only three earned runs in six innings with five strikeouts.
The team returns to action March 12 to face Western Michigan and Northern Kentucky in the second day of the USF Series - Under Armour Showcase.
