IPFW Splits in Day Two Action of Showcase

CLEARWATER, Fla. -- The IPFW softball team split a pair of games during the second day of the USF Series - Under Armour Showcase, losing to Western Michigan 4-0 then beating Northern Kentucky 8-0 in five innings.
Lauren Watson lead the way at the plate for IPFW going (4 for 5) on the day while Jessica Murray, Sierra Miranda, and Kelly Pevely add three hits a piece for the day. Sydney Windlan had two base hits while Amber Davis, Emily Olszewski each added a hit, including a triple from Jenna Balthazor.
In the first game of the day in the first inning, Western Michigan homered over the fence to left center that drove in two runs. Then the Broncos would get another run in the third off an RBI single. IPFW would have an opportunity to cut into the lead in the bottom of the second when Miranda singled to center field. Davis would draw a walk, moving Miranda to second, but a pop up to the catcher would end the inning for the 'Dons.
Another scoring chance would occur in the bottom of the fourth when Pevely single down the left field line. Then Miranda would reach on a Bronco error moving Pevely to second. A Windlan single to left would load the bases for the Mastodons but another pop up in the infield would halt the rally. Western Michigan would add one more run in the sixth.
Demitra Burns went the distance on the mound for IPFW, giving up four runs and striking out five.
In game two, the 'Dons came out of the gates and did not look back scoring at least once in every inning of the game. In the first, Murray and Olszewski pulled off a double steal scoring Olszewski from third. In the second inning after Miranda advance to third on a wild pitch, she would score off a Northern Kentucky error. Murray lead off the third inning by doubling to left center and then Pevely would hit a single advancing Murray to third. After Pevely stole second, Davis would single to center field scoring Murray.
Pevely and Davis would then pull off the second double steal of the game for IPFW, scoring Pevely from third and advancing Davis to second. Balthazor would lead the fourth off with a triple to right field and then scored on the next play when Watson singled through the left side. Watson would then come around to score off a Pevely single. Then in what would be the final frame, Windlan doubled down the left field line and would score when Watson singled up the middle to walk off.
Sarah Lazarowich pitched all five for the Mastodons giving up no runs, only three hits, and striking out five for the game.
