BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The IPFW softball team split the opening day of the Hoosier Classic, defeating Bowling Green in walk-off fashion 2-1, before falling to UIC 9-0 in five innings.
In the opener, both teams scored a run in the first inning. The lone run of the game for Bowling Green came on a leadoff home run. IPFW got the run back in the bottom half of the inning after Lauren Watson reached on an error, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt, third on a groundout, and then scored on a wild pitch.
The two teams had multiple opportunities to score in the game, as they combined to leave 12 runners on base.
In the bottom of the seventh, Sierra Miranda took the first pitch she saw to the left-center gap for a leadoff triple. Taylor Gordy Prescott stepped in for her first plate appearance of the season, and delivered a ground ball to the shortstop, allowing Miranda to score from third and give the 'Dons the walk-off win.
Demitra Burns threw a complete game to pick up her fourth victory of the season. Burns allowed one earned run on five hits while striking out two Falcons.
In the second game, UIC jumped out to the lead with a three-run first inning. The Flames added four runs in the second and two more in the fourth as the 'Dons were unable to push a run across, stranding eight runners.
Sarah Lazarowich took the loss for IPFW, allowing seven earned runs in 1 1-3 innings. Elizabeth Snodgrass came on to pitch the final 3 2-3 innings, surrendering two earned runs on three hits while striking out two.
IPFW continues the Hoosier Classic with a 7 p.m. game on March 19 against Wright State.
