3/20/2016 12:21:00 AM | Softball
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The IPFW softball team picked up a win on the final day of the Hoosier Classic as the Mastodons defeated Wright State 4-2, avenging a loss to the Raiders earlier in the season.
Jenna Balthazor led the 'Dons on the night going 2 for 2 with a double, an RBI, a run scored, and a walk. Taylor Lyman was also 2 for 2, walked, and scored twice
Sarah Lazarowich threw a complete game, allowing two earned runs on four hits while striking out two.
The Raiders scored first, thanks to a two-run single in the top of the second. IPFW got one back in the bottom half of the inning. Three consecutive walks to Lyman, Balthazor, and Lauren Watson loaded the bases. A groundball off the bat of Emily Olszewski could not be handled by the WSU second baseman, allowing a run to score.
The Mastodons scored their final three runs in the bottom of the fourth. With one out, Demitra Burns reached on an error and Lyman singled, bringing Balthazor to the plate. With a 2-2 count, Balthazor delivered a double to the left-center gap, scoring Burns. The throw from the centerfielder to third was wild, going into the IPFW dugout, allowing Lyman and Balthazor to score.
Wright State put two runners on in the sixth, but Lazarowich was able to strike out the final two batters to end the threat. In the seventh, Lazarowich retired the Raiders in order to pick up the victory for the 'Dons.
IPFW returns to action March 23 for a doubleheader at Bowling Green with first pitch set for 3 p.m.
