3/23/2016 8:23:00 PM | Softball
Sierra Miranda led the Mastodons on the day, going 4 for 8 at the plate with four RBIs and two runs scored. Kelly Pevely collected three hits while Emily Olszewski and Demitra Burns each added a pair. Burns also drove in three runs.
The first game saw IPFW score first when Caitlyn DeLong took an 0-2 pitch over the left field fence for her second home run of the season, a solo blast. Bowling Green tied the game in the third on a one-out triple and an RBI groundout.
In the fourth, Pevely and Amber Davis led off the inning with singles. Then, with two outs, Burns deposited a 3-2 pitch over the left-center wall for her first home run as a Mastodon. The 'Dons had a chance to add to their lead in the sixth, but left the bases loaded.
Bowling Green tied the game in the bottom of the sixth on a three-run home run with two outs. In the top of the seventh, the 'Dons got a two-out hit from Pevely and a walk to Davis. Miranda stepped in and delivered the game-winning hit, a double down the left field line, scoring pinch runner Sydney Windlan and Davis.
The Falcons loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh, but Burns escaped the jam to secure the win. Burns earned her fifth victory of the season, throwing two innings of relief and allowing three earned runs on two hits while striking out three. Elizabeth Snodgrass began the game in the circle, throwing five innings and surrendering one run on four hits and also struck out four.
Game two saw BGSU get all the runs it would need in the bottom of the third, scoring five times. The Falcons added another run in the fifth with two outs.
The Mastodons got back into it in the sixth, scoring four runs, all of which came with two outs. With two gone in the inning, Olszewski and Miranda reached on back-to-back singles, the latter of which scored Lauren Watson and Jenna Balthazor. Another single from Pevely loaded the bases, and a second Falcon error allowed two runs to score.
Bowling Green added three more runs in the bottom of the sixth as the 'Dons were unable to push across a run in the final inning.
Burns started game two but had a no decision, pitching two innings and allowing one hit. Sarah Lazarowich came on for the final four innings and suffered the loss, surrendering nine runs, eight earned.
IPFW will play its home and Summit League opener when it takes on South Dakota March 25 for a doubleheader beginning at noon.
