DeLong Homers as Mastodons Split Series Opener With USD

Caitlyn DeLong led the 'Dons on the day, going 2 for 3 with a home run and three RBIs. Lauren Watson collected three hits for IPFW. Jessica Murray, Sierra Miranda, and Emily Olszewski all had two hits on the day.
In game one, the Mastodons jumped out to an early lead in the bottom of the first. Watson led off the inning with a single. After a wild pitch and a sacrifice bunt, Watson scored on a Miranda groundout. That would be the lone run for the 'Dons in the opener as USD tied the game in the fourth. The Coyotes added five runs in the fifth, including a three-run and solo home runs. South Dakota scored four more runs in the top of the seventh.
In the circle, Sarah Lazarowich took the loss for IPFW, allowing seven earned runs in six innings of work. She also struck out a season-high seven batters. Demitra Burns came on for the final inning and surrendered three earned runs on three hits while striking out two.
The nightcap had South Dakota taking the early lead with a two-run homer in the top of the first with two outs. The 'Dons had an opportunity in the second but left the bases loaded.
The Mastodons scored all three of its runs in the bottom of the fourth. Burns led off the inning with a single through the left side and Murray followed with a single down the left field line. DeLong stepped in, and on the fifth pitch of the at bat, deposited the ball over the right-center field wall, rounding the bases for her third home run of the year.
USD loaded the bases in the top of the sixth, but the 'Dons and starting pitcher Elizabeth Snodgrass escaped any damage by recording the final two outs. Snodgrass picked up her first career win as a Mastodon, throwing a complete game and allowing two earned runs on eight hits.
IPFW and South Dakota wrap up their Summit League series March 26 at 11 a.m.
