Softball Drops Series Finale to South Dakota

The Mastodons were led by Emily Olszewski and Jessica Murray, each going 2 for 3 at the dish. Olszewski drove in a pair of runs while Murray scored twice. Caitlyn DeLong hit her second home run is as many days, finishing the afternoon with a pair of RBIs.
South Dakota opened the game by scoring a run in the top first, but the 'Dons escaped further damage as the Coyotes left the bases loaded. IPFW took the lead in the second after a two-out single by Murray. DeLong came to the plate and took a 3-2 pitch over the wall for her fourth homer of the season.
USD tied the game in the top of the third with a leadoff home run. Both sides left runners on in the fourth, but it was the Mastodons who broke the tie in the fifth. With two outs in the inning, Olszewski singled and Sierra Miranda walked. Kelly Pevely delivered an RBI single to center, scoring Olszewski. A Coyote error followed, allowing Miranda to score and giving IPFW the 4-2 lead.
The lead was short lived as South Dakota tied the game in the top of the sixth, scoring on an error and a walk. Lead changes continued in the bottom half of the inning, as a leadoff walk to Murray and a pair of USD errors loaded the bases for Olszewski. She promptly stepped in, and on the first pitch, doubled down the left field line to score two runs. The Coyotes answered in the top of the seventh, scoring six runs as the 'Dons were unable to mount another comeback in the bottom of the seventh.
Sarah Lazarowich took the loss for the Mastodons, surrendering six runs in an inning of work. Elizabeth Snodgrass began the game in the circle for the 'Dons, throwing 5 1-3 innings and allowing four runs, two earned, while striking out three. Demitra Burns came on for the final 2-3 inning, getting both outs via strikeout.
IPFW returns to the field for a midweek game at No. 19 Notre Dame March 30 at 5 p.m.
