FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The IPFW softball team was unable to mount a late comeback as the Mastodons dropped the opening game of its series to South Dakota State 3-0.
Emily Olszewski, Kelly Pevely, and Demitra Burns each collected a hit for the 'Dons in the game. Starting pitcher Sarah Lazarowich threw a complete game, allowing five hits while striking out four Jackrabbits.
SDSU scored a pair of runs in the top of the fourth on a one-out double. The Jacks added an insurance run in the top of the seventh on an RBI single with two outs.
The Mastodons put a runner on base in five of the seven innings. In the second, Sierra Miranda drew a one-out walk before being caught attempting to steal second. Burns led off the bottom of the third with an infield single, but was also retired trying to steal second. Olszewski began the fourth with a single but a double play ended the scoring opportunity.
Jenna Balthazor led off the sixth inning with a walk. However, after moving to second on a sacrifice and third on a wild pitch, Balthazor was left stranded at third as the final two outs were recorded. Pevely begin the seventh with an infield single to second, but the double play bug bit the Mastodons again. Caitlyn DeLong followed with a two-out walk before the final out was recorded to end the game.
Due to forecasted weather, IPFW and South Dakota State have moved up their doubleheader to a 10 a.m. start on April 30 at Snider High School. Prior to game one, the Mastodons will honor its three seniors Taylor Gordy Prescott, Sarah Lazarowich, and Emily Olszewski.
