Mastodons Drop Doubleheader to Bison
4/9/2016 11:10:00 PM | Softball
FARGO, N.D. - On what was a very cold and windy day, the IPFW softball dropped its Summit League doubleheader to North Dakota State in a pair of 8-0 games.
In the first game, the Bison scored with two outs in the first inning. They added to the lead in the second with six runs, including a grand slam. NDSU tacked on its final run in the third.
IPFW had its first baserunner in the second when Kelly Pevely led off the inning with a walk. She would be left stranded as the next three 'Dons were retired.
The Mastodons loaded the bases in the top of the fifth. Demitra Burns led off the inning being hit by a pitch. Two outs later, Caitlyn DeLong delivered a single to left field. A walk to Jenna Balthazor loaded the bases, but the rally would end there for the 'Dons.
Burns took the loss in the circle for IPFW, throwing a complete game while allowing four hits and striking out three.
Game two was not much kinder to the Mastodons as North Dakota State scored four times in the bottom of the first. The 'Dons looked to respond in the second with one out as Burns reached on an infield single. She moved to second on a groundout, but they were unable to bring her around to score.
The Bison added two runs in the second and third innings to extend their lead. IPFW put a runner on in the fourth with a leadoff walk by Emily Olszewski. A pair of groundouts moved her to third but the final out was recorded as the 'Dons were unable to get a runner on in the fifth.
Sarah Lazarowich threw a complete game in the loss, surrendering eight hits but struck out four NDSU batters.
The series finale between IPFW and North Dakota State begins at noon on April 10.
